Welcome to Sisine Project
In the member states and above all in the new accession countries, the last ten years have been marked by processes of globalization and deregulation which have profoundly changed the functioning of labor markets and of society and the economy as a whole. Ever more frequently, European workers and citizens have to personally negotiate with employers, service providers and the administration; public and private organizations have adopted lighter, more flexible organizational structures, requiring a continual process of negotiation between different divisions and departments; the growth of the service economy has brought ever higher numbers of employees work in direct contact with the public. Meanwhile the growth of migration and the internationalization of the economy, have led to ever more frequent contacts among customers, suppliers, bosses and employees from different cultural backgrounds, creating the risk of conflict or misunderstanding. In brief, negotiation has become a key skill for an ever growing number of European citizens. Hence the need to provide effective training in negotiating skills to large learner populations. The strategic goal of Sisine is to develop and pilot new training practices and technology-based tools that make this possible.
Sisine will develop innovative training practices to improve the negotiating skills and intercultural awareness of professional trainers and trainers, front-office staff and other staff in contact with the public, union representatives etc. The training offered will center on the kinds of negotiation workers engage in during their everyday professional activities (rather than on classical managerial negotiation). The training methodology will be based on a blended strategy combining classroom learning with eLearning-based self-study. Both the classroom learning and the self-study sessions will make intensive use of a novel simulation environment, developed within the project. The new environment will incorporate technologies from Artificial Life and Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG). The use of simulation will ensure that users can learn by doing at home as well in the classroom. ELearning will make it possible to reach large numbers of learners who currently have no access to this kind of training.
Sisine will develop a Training Kit comprising the Sisine software, a trainers handbook (describing the training methodology and ways in which this can be applied) and a User-Guide for learners. The project will conduct 3 pilot studies to test the methodology and the kit. Each pilot study will be conducted in a single country and will look at a specific scenario requiring effective negotiating skills: commercial negotiation for small and medium enterprises (Poland), negotiation for trade union representatives (Slovakia), inter-cultural negotiation (Italy). Trials will be conducted in two phases, each lasting three months and involving approximately 25 learners. The project will thus involve a total of roughly 150 learners. A specific project activity is dedicated to evaluation using qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of evaluation during the first phase of the pilot studies will be used to revise the methodology and tools used in the second phase.

Final project conference: " SISINE: An integrated simulation for negotiation " On Friday, November 30, 2007 SISINE held its final conference. The conference took place in the Aula Piaget of the Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie della Cognizione (ISTC-CNR) via S. Martino della Battaglia 44, Rome, Italy. Orazio Miglino (Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie della Cognizione – ISTC-CNR) and the other project partners have presented reports on the results achieved. For more details see the “Dissemination”
